| What
is Mass Aggie?
The
University of Massachusetts in Amherst was founded in 1864 as the
Massachusetts Agricultural College and was often referred to as
the Mass Aggie. The college was established as a result of the Morrill
Act, the federal Land Grant Act of 1862, to establish a land-grant
college in each state to provide instruction in agriculture and
the mechanical arts to the citizenry. From its beginning in 1864,
the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, has maintained a strong
connection with Massachusetts agricultural businesses, farmers and
the public and continues to conduct agricultural research and provide
information to industry professionals through outreach education.
The University also continues to provide the opportunity for students
to acquire college degrees to further careers in agriculture, forestry,
turf, landscape, nursery and floriculture.
